I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I really haven’t been posting things like I usually do here on Global Thrash Assault. There’s a few reasons for this. For starters, this past week I caught a pretty nasty cold that simply got the best of me. We’ve all been there before. The constant runny nose, sipping hot tea by the gallons, and going to bed earlier than you ever thought possible. It sucks. Or at least it did, because by the time the weekend rolled around I was feeling like my old-self and was ready to do some serious blogging. Until I read the internet.
I think you’ve all heard about the situation regarding “Dimebag” Darrell’s grave site being desecrated by some stupid punk who apparently doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong.
I think it goes without saying that this was a despicable act; one that not only disrespects the deceased but his family and friends that are still alive today. Burying someone is never easy, I can’t even imagine what it must be like to bury someone who’s time was cut entirely too short because of some maniac with a gun and bad intentions. Having to see shit like this at his final resting place? It must be sickening.
Believe me, I’m just as upset about this situation as anyone. Growing up Pantera was a band that I constantly listened to. Although my taste in music has changed over the years, Pantera still finds its way into my rotation every-now-and-again. Whether your a fan of the band or not, you have every reason to be outraged by this incident. It’s a disgusting act. And trust me when I say, people are outraged.
The perpetrator of this act was quickly identified as Reece Eber, the former vocalist of the band Nuclear Hellfrost. Thanks to the internet word got around pretty quickly and both Reece and Nuclear Hellfrost got what was coming to them. Cancelled shows and an overwhelming amount of public shaming are just a few of the things this band has experienced in the last 24-48 hours. Initially I was glad to see the outrage, this is the type of shit that should be called out by people, especially people in the metal community where Dime had such an impact. However somewhere along the line things got out of control. I’m talking way out of control.
Rather than condemning these actions and demanding those responsible be held accountable, people decided to form a homophobic mob filled with death-threats, douchebaggery and a complete lack of understanding of what they’re doing and why it’s so wrong.
Now before I go any further I should point out that not everyone who expressed outrage over this situation became part of this mob. However there was an overwhelming amount of people who did and that’s why I’m addressing this issue here today.
I can’t believe I (or anyone else for that matter) have to point this out, but apparently I do. Threatening to kill someone is an act that can land you in jail. It’s one of the dumbest things you can do on the internet and anyone that participated in this activity should be ashamed of themselves. I get that you’re mad, you have every reason to be, but before you start beating your chest and start acting like an un-evolved cave person threatening to murder someone, consider this:
You’re mad because someone defaced Dime’s grave. Understandable. However did you ever stop and think that Dime is dead because he was murdered and that threatening to murder the individual responsible for desecrating his grave would do nothing more than make you appear insensitive to the circumstances surrounding Dime’s death? Didn’t think so. I don’t know if you know this, but we’re not living in ancient Babylon. It’s no longer “an eye for an eye.” Your concept of “justice” is centuries old. The fact you’re willing to post a picture of yourself with a gun threatening to kill someone on the internet is proving this guy Reece’s point to be true: you’re probably a stupid hillbilly. Seriously. Grow up. There’s a more mature way to stand up for your hero.
I’m also curious why the band themselves haven’t addressed these threats. There are literally hundreds of threatening comments written all over the band’s Facebook page. I’m not sure who is in charge of the official Pantera page but someone involved with this band should probably step up and say something. They’ve experienced a tragic loss in the worst way possible. The last thing they should do is sit back and do nothing while death threats are being hurled at another human being, regardless of what a terrible person this individual is or isn’t. At least that’s just my opinion. Take a look at a few of the comments below to see just how bad things got:
Now that we got the “death-threatening” portion of the mob out of the way, lets move on to the homophobic section, shall we?
Lets be honest here: homophobia is a terrible issue that millions of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people face throughout the world and the metal community is plagued by it. I’ve discussed this issue before, most notably when I came out as a gay man on this very blog. Many of my readers sent me congratulatory messages of support and encouragement, and many agreed that homophobia is a major problem within the metal community.
Now before I start tearing into this homophobic “mob,” I’d like to point out that this Reece character used a homophobic slur himself, writing the word “FAG” on a piece on paper which he then placed on Dime’s grave. “I’m not a homophobe” he declared as his way of justifying his use of a word that’s rooted in hate. NEWS FLASH: yes he is. People who aren’t homophobic don’t use the word “fag,” it’s as simple as that. But rather than point this simple fact out, proving that his Reece guy is in fact an idiot, many Pantera fans decided to join in on the gay bashing. Because we all know that the best way to stand up to a disrespectful piece of shit who defaced a persons grave is to sink to the same low-life level of bigotry as them. Oh wait. That’s not at all what you should do.
I wonder then, why Facebook pages like “Nuclear Hellfrost suck dick” have popped up with a description that reads “Nuclear Hellfrost as we all know is a so called metal band that likes to get together on stage and choke on each others cocks.” Oh, that’s right. Because bashing gay people for being who they are is hilarious! Ugh.
Look, I’m gay. I keep up with gay culture. I’ve read plenty of magazine and online articles, most of which have to do with LGBT people fighting for equal rights, horrible acts of violence against LGBT people, discrimination against LGBT people, fashion, travel, and pop culture. I have never once read anything about “choking on each others cocks.” Ever. This page is nothing more than a bunch of extremely offensive stereotypes put together as a feeble attempt to insult the people who desecrated a dead man’s grave. It’s bullshit and the person (or persons) behind this page should be ashamed of themselves. Think it’s funny? Then you don’t know that LGBT youth have the highest suicide rate, you haven’t read an article about a teen forced to move out of his/her house after telling his/her parents that they were gay. You haven’t read about the 8 transgender women who were murdered in as many weeks. You’ve never been in a “closet”, spending your high school days alone while your friends went out on dates never knowing what you were going through. I have. This page isn’t funny. It’s embarrassing for the 169 people who “like” it on Facebook. It’s hurtful, disrespectful and sends a terrible message.
Imagine the LGBT person that listens to Pantera and then discovers that a Pantera fan created this page. What kind of message do you think this sends? The moderator needs to shut this page down. It’s the right thing to do.
Believe it or not someone actually took the time out to create a Facebook profile for Reece Eber, the man responsible for defacing Dime’s grave. It appears the page has been taken down or deleted but I managed to grab a few screen shots before it disappeared forever.
Notice anything? The person responsible for this fake account made Reece into a gay man that “loves to suck cock and guzzle cum.”
Hilarious right? Because all gay men do is “suck cock and guzzle cum,” they don’t contribute to society and lead normal lives just like straight people. In fact, I’m sucking cock right now! Silly reader, you thought I ran a blog on thrash metal for over 2 years and have held down the same job for nearly 7. HA! Oh…wait. I’m not sucking cock and I have done both those things. See why this shits offensive? This fake profile was created as a way to insult Reece, but all it really does is insult gay men in a way that’s both rude and obscenely offensive.
Hang on a sec. Did I mention the AIDS joke on this page?
HA! AIDS. Nothing like a pandemic that is currently affecting millions of people and has no cure to prove that this Reece guy is an asshole. Oh wait, he did that on his own. And whoever made this page has proven that they too, are an asshole. Great job, bud!
Thankfully other, more reasonable pages, have popped up. Pages like “Ban Nuclear Hellfrost + HOD.” Amazingly this page has more likes than Nuclear Hellfrost, which is great! Nuclear Hellfrost will be blackballed in the world of heavy metal and never play a show again. Justice. One problem: this page is as bad as the others. At least this time around the moderator got called out on it. You think an apology would be in order, but you’d be wrong. Read the exchange below:
Well at least the moderator admitted he was a bigot. That’s a step in the right direction, right? Wrong again. This page has over 8,000 “likes.” 8,000 people who read these posts and these comments and yet continue to “like” this page. “What’s a little bigotry in the name of justice?” is the only possible rational that I can think of for this pages success. That’s disturbing. People are so blinded by their rage that they refuse to see the blatant bigotry that’s right in front of them. Even more disturbing is the fact that when this moderator was called out on his homophobia he/she basically laughed it off and said, “yup, I’m a bigot.”
Have you ever heard the expression “cooler heads will prevail”? Do you know why people say that? Because it’s true. Like I said in the beginning of this post, people have every reason to be mad at this despicable act. However this act doesn’t give people the right to say cruel and demeaning things about gay people. Period. You can stand up for what’s right without making a gay Pantera fan – who loves the band as much as you – feel unwelcome. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and think before you type. If you think it might be offensive, it probably is. Don’t type it. There you go, kids. It’s not that hard.
There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of these homophobic/threatening comments to be found. It’s disgusting. I actually had to walk away from the internet yesterday as a result. Perhaps the most upsetting part about this angry homophobic, death-threatening mob, is the lack of accountability they’re facing. Hardly anyone is calling these people out and when they do, the mob quickly gangs up on this individual with even more homophobic/threatening responses until that individual just gives up and moves on. This kind of shit within the metal community needs to end, and it needs to end now. Can you all (homophobic, threatening mob) stop the act? You know, the one where you have to act like a tough guy, “pussies and fags don’t listen to metal because they’re not tough and I’m a bad-ass. Better not mess with me.” Seriously. Your bullying is pathetic and it gives a genre filled with hard-working and talented musicians a terrible reputation and it makes fans who want nothing more than enjoy the music they love feel unwelcome. Just stop the fucking bullshit already. Seriously, grow the fuck up.
