Bio-Cancer are one of the most promising bands in today’s thrash metal scene. From the country of Greece these young thrashers just released their face melting debut album “Ear Piercing Thrash” last month through Athens Thrash Attack to waiting fans from around the world. Curious to learn a little more about the release as well as Bio-Cancer them self I shot the bands vocalist Lefteris a few question. Being the cool guy that he is, he was kind enough to answer back! Check out what he had to say in the interview below:
GLOBAL THRASH ASSAULT: Thanks for taking the time out the answer a few question for me today.
LEFTERIS: No need to thank my friend! We should thank you for all the support and interest in the band!
Bio-Cancer is a killer band that’s been around for a few years now, how did you guys get started?
Well everything started casually, just some guys playing some stuff, until today which is some guys listening to those stuff recorded haha.
What are some of your influences as a band?
Musically I would say old Kreator ,Destruction, Violence, Violator and some American thrash too!(Also we have covered songs form all these bands except Destruction)
So you guys just released your debut album “Ear Piercing Thrash” last month. Tell me, what kind of response has the album received from the fans and media so far?
So far so good! Plenty of people have supported us with the CD buying it from all over the world, and leaving some good comments too. As for reviews we have seen some nice ones and we are thankful for that!
The album was released through Athens Thrash Attack, how did the pairing of you two come to be?
Athens Thrash Attack is based in Greece as you may know, so it wasn’t so difficult to get acquainted. I think we met in a gig we played so they liked our stuff, we liked what they were doing so we made a deal!
Ear Piercing Thrash is your debut album, what was the writing process like for it?
To be honest we really rushed it. We like the result but it could be a lot better, but it was a fun process anyway, just writing a song playing it for a while and then recording it.
How about the recording process?
We really recorded everything pretty fast, and there was not any problems during it the whole process, but as I said before I feel it was kind of rushed!
Ear Piercing Thrash was anticipated by a lot of people for quite some time. Tell me, from the writing of the album until it was finally released last month how long did the entire process take?
We finished recordings, mixing, mastering in September, then we switched to Athens Thrash Attack (we had a deal with another label) and we also had to wait for the final artwork from the artist, so roughly 8-9 months.
I have to say every track on Ear Piercing Thrash is as catchy as it is brutal, was this something you guys set out to achieve or did it just kind of happen naturally?
I would say naturally, we weren’t sure of what the hell we were doing ”back then” but since we liked everything we were doing, we continued doing it.
You guys have some pretty harsh lyrics, what was the inspiration behind them?
Since the music is kinda extreme I thought the lyrics should be too! Violence, pain, betrayal, cancer and such stuff is what you can find in this Cd! To answer your Q I think that the music inspired the lyrics which is awkward haha!
The vocals on the album are absolutely insane; they’re like nothing I’ve ever heard before, especially in thrash. I’m curious to know, is there any reason you guys decided to use such harsh screams rather than a style that’s more typical to thrash metal?
Well as a vocalist, I always preferred vocals in the vein of Kreator, Morbid Saint, Hypnosia etc. And it’s the only style I can deliver as I never practice proper clean singing. Plus, it fits well with our music too I guess.
The artwork for the album was done by Andrei Bouzikov and it’s absolutely killer, it really matches the intensity of the album nicely. Did you give Andrei any artistic direction or did you give him free reign to do as he pleases?
Since we wrote the song ”Ear Piercing Thrash” the image you see in the artwork stuck in my head! We told him what we wanted, and he put some ideas too, and the result is kickass as hell!
So Ear Piercing Thrash has been out for a while now and you guys have played a couple of shows since its release. Any chance fans will get to see a Bio-Cancer tour in the future?
Yeah, of course as soon as we are ready we want to promote our work with a tour and thrash with some new fans out there!
What else is in store for Bio-Cancer in the future? Have you guys started writing any new material yet?
Right now we are rehearsing our old stuff with a new drummer, but we have some new ideas and concepts, and making sure we’re taking it slow this time.
Greece is home to some really killer bands. Suicidal Angels, Exarsis, Mentally Defiled and of course Bio-Cancer, and that’s just to name a few. Tell me, what’s the metal scene like in Greece and what are some other killer bands that people need to be listening to from this country?
I think we have a great scene! Suicidal Angels, Crucifier, Mentally Defiled, Released Anger, Exarsis, Chronoshpere, Fadom etc are some of the bands worth mentioning and checking!
I really appreciate you taking the time out to answer these questions. Is there anything you’d like to add?
I really want to thank you dude, for your interest and those great questions. Cheers from Athens ”shitty”!
